Matchy-Matchy

Yes I own a pair of puma sneakers that match several of my turquoise tops perfectly.  And yes, I do wear them together.  I did so today.  :)  After seeing A of Academichic rock her scarf and the plaid scarf that inspired her, and I remembered that I have one too.  I wasn't sure if I should wear the scarf wrapped around my neck or thrown over my shoulder, so I tried both.  Wrapped around is warmer and keeps the scarf from falling off, but it felt more debonair to wear it thrown over my shoulder.
Which do you like best?

Money Saving Tip

Target is now taking off $0.05 of your purchase (before tax) for every reusable bag you bring with you.  It's not a lot, but sometimes, every little bit counts, especially if you do a lot of grocery shopping or holiday shopping.

Tuesday's outift

I forgot to take pics of my outfit on Tuesday, so on Wednesday I re-created the outfit and took pictures.  The only difference between Tuesday and the pictures is that on Tuesday I wore a white tshirt that peaked out from under my blazer on the bottom.  I was inspired by Tiffany of I am Style-ish's post and wanted to incorporate a scarf into an outfit.  I think this scarf was originally my sister's, but I'm not sure.  We got this one and several others while in Rome the summer of 1997, the summer before we moved to Barcelona.  As you can see from the picture below, the scarf is different shades of tan and brown in animal prints.  I felt very comfortable pairing the scarf with the brown blazer and jeans.
At first I just had the scarf hanging down around my neck, but it got in the way so I tied it.  I know that pairing the scarf with a brown blazer was a "safe" look, but considering it was my first time trying it, safe is ok.  Maybe next time I'll use a bolder scarf or pair this one with something less safe.

Happy Black Friday

Happy Black Friday everyone!

This year was the first time I've ever woken up super early to stand out in the cold in order to buy something.  Luckily for us, there are two Targets in town and we happen to live right near the smaller one.  But I didn't just wake up early to go to Target.  I first woke up at 3 am hoping that Amazon would put the camera I wanted on sale.  Amazon had said they would put a Canon Powershot 12.1 MP camera on sale at midnight Pacific time, ie 3 am my time, but didn't specify which Canon 12.1 MP camera.  There just happen to be at least 5 12.1 MP Canon cameras.  So, I set my alarm, woke up at 3, grabbed my lap top and it turns out the one on sale was not the one I wanted. (Note the laziness, I didn't even get out of bed)  An hour later, The Fiance and I got out of bed and headed out to Target.  There were plenty of people there at 4:30 but we decided to stay anyway.  Target is super organized and we got in the store at 5, grabbed the vacuum cleaner, The Dyson Animal which by the way is *SPECTACULAR*, grabbed a robe and electric toothbrush for The Fiance and were out of Target by 5:15.  We then drove over to Home Depot and waited until 6 am for it to open.  We grabbed batteries and a wine cooler (for a gift) and were out of there by 6:15.  All in all, we were back home by 6:30.  For my first Black Friday, it was awesome.  But the story doesn't end there my friends. . .

After our early morning shopping, we headed back to bed.  I got up at 2:30 pm, let Bella out to go potty and checked my email.  It turns out that Overstock.com sent me a 10% off coupon for their Black Friday Event.  Originally Overstock had the camera I wanted for $369 when the lowest price I found overall was $349.  The 10% off coupon made the camera $332 with free shipping and no tax, about $100 less than if I had bought it at Best Buy in person (they had it at full price of $399).  So, of course, I bought it.  This is my new camera.  Let's just say that I'm *super* excited.  I'll let you all know how awesome it is when I get it, which I hope will be late next week or early the week after.
This is not the end of the story my friends, for after finding and buying my super awesome new camera, The Fiance and I headed out to look for a Christmas tree.  We went to a local general store that sells local crafts and supplies.  We took Bella with us and I found a gorgeous 7 and a 1/2 foot tree.  I managed to get a student discount and Bella got more attention than she knew what to do with.    She is now passed out on her doggy bed looking adorable.

Happy Thanksgiving!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING to my U.S. readers!

Got yesterday, Wednesday, off from class and I decided to go in to work.  I wore my new necklace that I bought at the jewelry party.  The necklace is smoky quartz and catches light beautifully.  I'm *very* happy I splurged and bought it.  Cathy originally bought the quartz crystals to make herself a necklace, but decided they were too heavy for her as she has neck problems.  Well, when I saw the necklace at the jewelry  party, I knew it would be going home with me.  Normally I buy freshwater pearls from Cathy, but this necklace is just too beautiful to have passed up.
I also decided to wear this blouse I got in Puerto Rico a few years ago.  I love this blouse and the floral print and would like to wear it more often but since its one of only a few blouses I have that are prints, I try to avoid wearing it regularly.   That its pretty sheer makes it difficult to wear often as well.  I almost always layer a black tank top under it to keep things decent.  When I bought the shirt it originally it had a black ribbon that tied in a weird place, so I had my mom remove it and kept the black ribbon which I used in this outfit as a belt.
I absolutely love the neckline of the blouse.  It makes the blouse easy to wear in warm weather or cold by layering a cardigan or blazer on it or not.  Also, because the neckline is pretty high, I'm able to wear it to work without worrying about showing too much, especially when I bend over to read or pick something up.  I have a few other blouses with similar necklines that I wear often for the same reasons.  They're cute and comfy and easy to layer while maintaining the ability to not show a whole bunch of cleavage.  Since I do have plentiful breasts, this is very important to me so that I can look professional and put together and maintain my comfort.
The Details:
Flower Print Blouse: Marianne (Puerto Rico)
Black Tank: Old Navy
Gray Pants: Gap
Black Cardigan: August Silk from Ross

Good News/Bad News

It turns out that my (accidental) weight loss means more than a few numbers on the scale.  This morning I went to put on a pair of pants that I bought in August.  Well, they're now huge on me.  In fact, if I tried to wear them, they would probably fall off.  This is both good and bad news.  Good because there's an actual difference in my body due to losing weight.  It also serves as an incentive to continue to lose weight in a healthy manner.  Bad news because there is now one less pair of pants that fit me.  I think the count is now 3 pairs of pants that are too big, of which 2 I most definitely cannot wear.   I'm hoping that my seamstress neighbor can take them in, but if not, that's a whole lot of money that I can't get back.  Unfortunately, that works as a disincentive to losing weight because I can't afford a whole new wardrobe's worth of pants. :/
The outfit pictured here is actually from Monday.  It was cold and rainy and I wanted to be warm.  Also, adding in a little cheer and happiness with the pink wasn't bad either.  So I chose my long cardigan and layered it over a tank top so as to not add extra bulk to my frame under the cardigan.
I found the necklace rummaging through my old jewelry in August when I went to my parent's house.  I have no idea where I got it from or what its made of.  All I know is that I like it decided to wear it on Monday.  I've noticed that as of late, I would rather accessorize with something, even though its not "real" jewelry (fine jewelry) than not accessorize at all.  This is especially true given that I have very few pieces of fine jewelry.  Not that I have a whole bunch of other jewelry either.  I would just rather wear something, so long as its cute, regardless of its nature than not wear jewelry when I want to.  How do you decide what jewelry to wear?

Holiday Wishlist Addendum

I JUST saw this dress linked to Corporette's post and I want to jump up and down in excitement.  I saw this dress this summer but decided not to buy it because I wasn't sure of the sizing or the price.  Now that it's on super duper sale, I'm going to have to let the Fiance know that I want this dress BAD.
It's an Old Navy shift dress that is super easy to individualize.  You could layer on a jacket or cardigan to make it office appropriate or wear a great statement necklace or brooch to make it evening special.  Also, if you find it a bit shapeless, a belt to accentuate your waist would definitely work.  Playing with different shoes and leggings would also be a fun way to make the dress your own.  Anybody have any other ideas?

Hats + Walks

During the weekends, The Fiance and I walk Bella for a long-ish distance (considering her little legs).  Well, Sunday it was cold and looked like it was about to rain.  We decided to walk her anyway.  I took advantage of the weather to try out a new look.  I got this really cute gray wool hat about a month and a half ago at my favorite consignment shop, but I hadn’t figured out how to wear it.  So I tried it on with my long turquoise cardigan and went to walk Bella.  I thought it looked super cute and is a look I would like to try again somehow.  The question of course with hats is whether to wear them when inside or just strictly outside/traveling to my destination.  Any thoughts on wearing or incorporating hats into outfits?

Holiday Wish List

Since Thanksgiving is next week and Christmas is right around the corner, I figured I would compose a Holiday Wish List even though I REALLY don't expect presents from anyone.  It's fun to pretend though.  So here is a list of things I want in no particular order.

1. CUTE Rain Boots (Target)

2. Dresses from Bravissimo

3. Canon Digital Rebel

4. Knee high boots (that fit my calves) in both Black and Brown

5. Coat(s) from Bravissimo

Reader help

Ladies, I have a quandary.  I discovered the store Bravissimo online while searching for big bras and clothing to fit girls with big bras.  Unfortunately, I won't be traveling to the U.K. anytime soon so I would have to order anything online without trying it on first.  Considering I would also have to pay for international shipping, I want to make sure I know what I'm getting.

So my question is, do any of you have any experience ordering or buying from Bravissimo?  If so, what are your thoughts?

Jewelry Party

Today was Cathy's jewelry party.  Cathy is the sister-in-law of one of the women that I work with.  She is a high school teacher and also makes jewelry as a way of managing stress.  Every year she throws a jewelry party and this is the 2nd one that I've gone to.  Let me tell you, it is REALLY hard to walk out of there with nothing in hand.  As it is, I bought one gorgeous necklace this year that I will probably wear to Evelyn's wedding as well as the office Christmas Dinner.
I wanted to keep my outfit simple and easy so I chose this lightweight sweater and jeans and embellished it with a hair pin turned brooch from Sew Lovely.  I also wore my hair up in a french twist using the Clever Clip and let my bangs down.  AND I wore makeup! (Big deal I know.)  I'm not a big makeup wearer as it generally takes more time and effort than I have.  But for days in which I go to work or would like to look extra cute I wear some makeup.  So today I used a brown eyeliner, some brown eye shadow and light rose blush.  Its not complicated, but I feel like I look more put together.

Photography + Inspirations

I had originally started this post with this:
I have been looking at my pictures on the blog and have come to the conclusion that the lighting in my house is awful. If I take a picture inside, the light is either too bright (kitchen pictures) or not bright enough (everywhere else). Even though I try to take pictures outside, they still look bad. Because I tend to take outside pictures with Bella who is busy being a puppy, I don't have enough time to frame a picture and try different settings all while relying on the camera that is on a tripod 10 feet away. I'm not really sure how, but I really want to make sure that my pictures are of a better quality. Anybody have any suggestions (other than get a new camera)?

But now, I may have no other choice than to get a new camera.   As you can see from my outfit pictures for today, my camera is dying.  And it is a slow and painful death.  Just for reference, the pants are gray, the cardigan is black, cream and gray and normally my skin isn't purple in tint.  Nor, as the picture below seems to indicate, do I blur sideways.
So what's a blogging girl to do?  The Fiance's camera is even older than mine and isn't anywhere near as cool or useful as mine.  His doesn't even have a 10 second timer!
I'm seriously considering looking at Black Friday ads to see if I can find a decent point and shoot for under ~$100.  It's tough buying a new camera, especially a point and shoot, when there are so many other things I could use the money on (like shoes!  KIDDING!)   Of course, if I could have my way I would be buying a Digital SLR, preferably a Canon Rebel.  Luckily I have a week to think about this and research to make sure that if I *do* decide to get a camera, it's the best one for me and my money.
 ****
Now, on to the clothes.  Earlier today I saw S's post on Academichic talking about where she gets her style inspirations.  Oddly enough, I got my style inspiration today from A of Academichic in this post.  After I saw her do a cardigan, top + scarf, I decided I would try to use the same items of clothing but bring them together differently.  I too went mostly monochromatic, sticking to gray, black and cream.  But to make the outfit special, I chose to add a red scarf that my sister gave me a few years ago and matching red sling backs.  I love the idea of incorporating a pop of color or two into an outfit, especially if the color brings the outfit together and completes it. Where do you get your style inspirations and how do you make them your own?
And, does anyone have any suggestions for cameras?

Clothes + Memories

Yesterday I wore a red velvet shirt that used to belong to my dad.  About 10 years ago, I stole this shirt from his closet, and have worn it every once in a while ever since.  It is horribly unflattering yet comfortable and warm and full of good thoughts.  I've chosen not to add a pic of me in this horribly unflattering shirt b/c 1. the pictures I took turned out purple and bleeding (my digital camera is dying a slow and painful death) and 2. its terribly unflattering. :-p
Instead, I wanted to talk about how certain items of clothing or outfits hold memories.  One example is the red velvet shirt that was my dad's.  Another is the skirt I wore today.  At my High School Graduation I won an award that came with a $300 check.  A day or two after graduation, my younger sister, best friend and I went to this really awesome mall where I spent $150.  One item I got was the linen skirt I wore today.  Every time I wear it or think of it, this skirt reminds me of my sister and best friend shopping and enjoying how young we were.
Another item that holds special memories is a gold cross that my grandmother gave me several years ago.  I don't remember why she gave it to me, but I do know that her mother had given it to her.  I don't wear it often, but it sits in my jewelry box and every time I look at it, it makes me happy and reminds me of her.
All in all, there are lots of different items of clothing or outfits, that for whatever reason remind me of certain places, occasions or people.  What items remind you of certain things and why?

Repurposing a dress

I wasn't 100% sold on this outfit this morning.  I had intended to wear dark gray tights instead of the heather ones in the picture, but I ended up not shaving my legs last night and so I couldn't wear my rather sheer dark gray tights and opted for heather gray ones hoping it would work.  I spent a good chunk of the morning worrying if the gray tights looked odd, but after a while I simply put it out of my mind.  1. I was already wearing them and 2. I have more important things to worry about.  So, I continued on with my day.  I got home, took my pictures and came to realize that I actually really like the outfit, even with the heather gray tights!  Sometimes, a picture is all you need to convince you of your own cuteness.
Well, after I got home and did the Bella required things, I went to my neighbor's house with a few items of clothing that I hope to re-purpose.  One of those is the light aqua dress in the picture above.  The dress no longer fits my bust, but because I love the color and the fabric and the shape, I wanted to see if it was possible to turn the dress into a skirt.  It turns out  that it is and I will probably have it, along with a few other re-purposed items and a spectacular consignment store find, sometime in the next week or two.
I really do think that closet shopping and altering old clothes in order to re-purpose them is a great way to save money, conserve resources and stay green.  It's pretty easy to turn a dress into a skirt, essentially just cut it and add some elastic or a zipper.  Do any of you have any other creative ways to recycle clothing?

(Accidental) Weight Loss

For a while now, I've been trying to lose some weight.  I know that on the BMI scale I am literally on the cusp between overweight and obese.  Unfortunately, my chest pain has made it tough to work out consistently without ending up in a whole ton of pain.  So I was pleasantly surprised today when I stepped on the scale and realized that I had lost 5 lbs.  It's not a whole lot, I know, but considering I haven't been able to workout a lot and I've lost it mainly by making healthier choices while eating, its kind of a big deal. (Yay optimism!)
In light of not being able to work out a whole lot, for the past week I've been wearing a pedometer to see how many steps I take in a day.  It's my hope that by taking a week or two to figure out a baseline of how many steps I take in a day, I'll be able to slowly increase the number of steps and lose weight.  I also plan on walking Bella more often.  The combination of the pedometer + walking Bella should hopefully help me lose some more weight.
Now for the reasons I want to lose weight.  One is as mentioned above, on the BMI scale I am very close to being obese.  I would like to approach a healthier weight.  I'm sure that some of my back pain stems from the extra weight I carry around every day.  Aside from avoiding pain, I also want to make sure I live a nice, long, healthy life.  Knowing that my dad has adult Diabetes, keeping my weight under control is uber-important.  So in order to get healthy and stay that way, I've got to get my weight under control.  Unfortunately, as mentioned above, my chest pain has made this difficult if not impossible due to the inability to work out and that I had to take some steroids a year ago.  The combination of the two made me gain 15 lbs.  I was able to lose 20 lbs, but then gained another 5.  Right now I'm about 5 lbs lighter than when my chest started hurting.  Another, more vain reason that I want to lose weight, is that I would like to look *amazing* in a wedding dress (for the wedding that I'm not sure when will happen).   In essence I have set some long and really long term goals for myself.

Anybody have some advice on the best way to get and stay motivated while losing weight?

Here are some useful links to using pedometers if anyone is interested:

New Logo!

After deciding to put Law School Fashionista on Facebook (find here), I decided I needed a logo for the blog.  After some playing around I ended up with the image above.  I really like the way the logo turned out, especially since it didn't take a whole lot of effort or expertise.  Aren't computers awesome?

Target Stalker

I have been stalking this dress at Target for about 2 months.  It started out at $39.99.  Yesterday afternoon I got it for $9.95.  Such is the power of stalking the sales and clearance racks of your favorite stores.
Once I got the dress, the problem then became, what to wear it with.  It's a sleeveless dress in a color that I'm not used to wearing.  After searching my closet and realizing that I wouldn't be able to wear gray tights without first shaving my legs, I decided to go with brown tights, cordovan heels, black cardigan and necklace.
As an aside, I definitely need to get some black and gray tights that are opaque enough to hide the possibility that I may or may not have shaved my legs in a while.  I'm also probably going to have the hem of the dress let out enough so that its knee length.

Thursdays are my long days.  I have five classes starting at 9 and ending at 3:50.  It's a tough day.  In addition, today was cold and really rainy.  I just wanted to be comfy and warm all day long and decided to add my hair pin from Sew Lovely to add a little bit of detail to my hot pink sweater and jeans combo.  Just FYI the pic to my left shows me with my hair in a french twist using the clever clip.

Hat Trick

Today's outfit is the third in my hat trick of Closet Shopping outfits.  In fact, the two major pieces of the outfit came from closet shopping!

I have had this skirt for several years, and once I outgrew the ability to wear it around my hips, I stopped wearing it.  Now that I am more confident and open-minded about clothes, I tried the skirt on again and realized it fits right at my waist and the length is perfect.  My next problem with the skirt became, what to wear with it.  As you can see from the close-up picture, it is a mix of blues and turquoises of different shades with some tan thrown in for fun.  I was first going with just plain black or white to wear, but then I went back into my closet and discovered the faux bolero top thus incorporating some blue/brown power as mentioned by A. of Academichic here.
My mom bought this top a few years ago and when she got tired of wearing it, she gave it to me.  I've worn it a couple of times, but have avoided incorporating it into my wardrobe because the faux bolero ends up showing a whole bunch of my bra and its a smidge too skin tight.  I was able to fix the bolero-bra issues by baby pinning the bolero closer in so my bra wouldn't show.  I also realized that either the shirt got stretched out by sitting in my closet or I've lost some weight since the last time I wore this top.  So, both issues were solved and I'm wearing the top.
I wanted to add some visual interest up towards my face since 1. I got a new hair cut and love it and 2. its my face! I want people to look at me when they talk to me.  So I added a fabric orchid I got from Sew Lovely.  Its meant to be a hairpin as it has a bobby pin attachment, but because of the cut of the top I was able to tuck the bobby pin over the edge of the shirt and wear the orchid as a brooch.  The orchid also incorporates the flower-theme of the skirt in an area of my outfit that is pretty plain.  All in all, my closet shopping hat trick outfit makes me really happy.  Its colorful and flowery on a really yucky cold rainy day.

Closet Shopping Take 2

Last night I shopped my closet again.  This time, however, I did it with my friend Melanie.  She came over and I gave her a whole bunch of tops that no longer fit me.  In addition, I also found an American Eagle skirt that I haven't worn (or thought about) in years.  So, because I am shopping out of my closet, I wanted to see how I could wear the skirt.  At first I had no idea what to pair with it because it has a very pale blue almost gray background.  Then I realized that I could just take the colors out of the pattern of the skirt.  So I added my tan boots to compliment the tan leaves, a brown sweater to go with the brown stems, and a bright blue tank to add some color intensity to the small blue flowers.  I added a slip for coverage and blue tights for warmth.
I also got my hair cut today.  Its only about 2 inches shorter in length, but I also got my bangs cut, so I have proper bangs again.  I had no idea I would end up liking bangs.  Let alone short-ish side bangs.  One main reason I like them so much is that they force me to take care of them.  I *have* to iron them or blow dry them or they'll stick out causing gigantic frizz.  It also means that, even if I pull my hair back, I have *something* that is pretty framing my face so its not bare and I don't look like I'm going to go run a marathon with my hair slicked back.  Also I think its a great way to add a feminine touch that is really simple and pretty, especially if I wear my hair up or pinned back.
As you can tell from the pictures, I had the hairstylist blow dry my hair then iron it straight.  I rarely iron my hair.  Partially because its a pain and partially because doing it too often causes some serious damage.  Also, I'm lazy.  But when I get my hair cut, I love having it ironed for me.  The funny thing is that two of my guy friends in my 4pm class today immediately noticed that I had done something to my hair.  Its nice to know when people, especially boys that aren't engaged to you, notice things about you.  I try to do my best to notice when my friends change their appearances and let them know it looks cute so that they too get to feel noticed.  I know I don't always do it right away or all the time, but yes ladies, there is someone out there that pays attention and is happy you feel good about yourself to change things up.  And for the record, the Fiance immediately said that my hair looks nice!
